Maintaining a nuchal hump?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Good point on the temperature. Higher temps increase the metabolism, and with dominant aggro fish it simply winds them up a bit more.

Growing and maintaining a Good nuchal hump

1st. is GENETICS the hump has to be in their genes
2. Dominance- He must be the dominant fish in the territory, meaning there HAVE to be other occupants but he must sit on top
3. FEMALES in visual sight
4. CLEAN WATER is a must
5. Warm water 82-87 degrees
6. SPACE
7. GOOD QUALITY FOOD
8. Interaction doesn't hurt, notice mine in the avator has a net in his mouth, I used to mess with him quite often with my hands, nets, plants, etc...
9. TOYS floating ping-pong balls, I've even put smaller cichlids in hamster balls and with him "play soccer" with him so to speak

I would agree with all of the above with the exception of needing females in sight. Seen & owned plenty of big nuchal humped males with no females present.

RD. You never stop provide educational material, for even the experienced fishkeeper (which i consider myself after these many years)
Thankyou for that.

I must say though, that i have had GREAT success feeding peas to my cichlids. In particular in my "Gold Saum" seems to benefit from them. I do not feed them for any nutritional value, but to (exactly as AquaNero describes it) Theire ability to keep the poop-flow in balance (my own words)

I have clear pictures of my wild caught "Gold saum", being skinny and looking quite unsatisfied nutrionally speaking. Then i posted pictures a few weeks later, with the only change being that i added peas to its diet, and it appeared much more healthy, and in form.

So, i have no doubt that peas provide no nutritional benefit, but due to the fibres contained in them, they seem to help digesting the steady pellet diet.

I FEED MINE CHING MIX HUMP BOOSTER, NEW LIFE SPECTRUM 2MM PELLETS & HIKARI GOLD MEDIUM PELLETS ALSO 1 X A WEEK FROZEN HIKARI KRILL. HERES MINE 7YRS OLD.

Sweet GT!

One thing I've noticed is that keeping lights on for longer period helps with hump and color development.
i have heard different opinions about this such as keeping them off and leaving for the weekend and coming back to find your midas with a larger hump? id llike to see what others think?

For me, if I leave lights off for a day or two I'll find my Midas (fish in avatar) lighter in colors and hump down a little. It could just be only my fish that behaves that way but it works for me.
