Maintenance... worth it or not

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I understand the love of the fish but the hate for the maintinance, but you still need to do it. If your not a big fan of maintinance, then you need to set up your tank to allow for that. More room for the fish, light population, or auto water changers ect.. if you keep on it every week its not so bad, its usually a problem when you let something go and it goes out of control on you.

If you don't want to do the work ...Stay out of the hobby...For the fishes sake!

These fish didn't ask to be in our care, we capture them, breed them and we must take care of them.

It's all been said before. And there will always be someone who says they don't do anything and the fish seem to be good and I don't loose many (one is too many) fish, so whats the use of this conversation?

I do get curious about some peoples children's health tho.

"I only lose a fish once in a while..." in 9 tanks I have hundreds of fish & never lose any, other than to old age or internal parasites (when new). But what the hell, it's just a fish right? & cheap ones can always be replaced. Their lives aren't nearly worth as much as expensive ones...

:iagree:
i use to clean twice a week but i started working more and now doing it once a week but work is slowing back down so soon ill be back to twice a week and i check water every week...

I do maintain my fish as if they were my own children.I have three kids of my own work a full time job and currently running nine tanks. On the weekends i break out the ole python and let it do most of the work. I check all filters and tanks to make sure there is no problems with water quality. all in all only about three hours for nine tanks is not that bad .You should in my opinion only run as many tanks as you can handle and devote enough time to.

Here, here! If maintence feels like a constant a chore, you're in the wrong hobby. I can't tell you how it feels after doing water changes, cleaning filters & looking at really healthy, robust, happy fish in sparkling clean water. That is my reward. Nevemind the long life most of my fish have. I have a pair of 18 year old elephant noses!

well, if you do everything right, and fish die, you have to just take it as 'one of those things' and not blame yourself. obviously, the fish was going to die anyway, whether from old age, or bad care before you got it, or some kind of freak heart failure.

if you don't do maintenance on the tanks, you have absolutely no one to blame but yourself when things go wrong, because you were neglectful. i would rather do the best i can to keep the water clean and the filters running properly, than to feel guilty about being lazy and killing my fish, or at least knowing that they are living in less than great conditions directly because of my lack of care.

I think way too many folks think, "they're just fish".

Water changes are KEY, testing parameters is helpful, but i will look for a telltale sign before i test the water, example, heavy breathing, plants looking bad, or unusual behaviors...

I have been keeping fish for 30 years. I rarely test my FW/BW tanks. This is because I never have any problems with my fish. The #1 thing I have learned in this hobby is to do water changes. It is the 1st & most important thing I can tell someone starting out in this hobby & the 1st thing I suggest, whenever something looks awry in a tank. 1st thing I ask on a list of questions for diagnosis is water change schedule--how much, how often?

Only thing I add to my tanks is Prime.

 :iagree: I do 50% wc every week on the tanks in my signature except the sw that's 33% every 2 weeks i test the water probly once a month unless somthing is wrong then it's more.Every tuesday morning i get up and pump water no thinking about it i just get up and do it and all my fish are in good health i got a 5 year old pair of red devil's and i plan on keeping them for another 5 by doing water changes.:grinno:
