somewhere over here
has anyone everheard of a maintinence free filtration system
today i went into this guys store where he only specializes in fish tanks
and he told me all his tank are with water 5years and up old
never cleaned um just adds water. is this possible?
its not a fish store but he has alot more and nicer fish
than a fish store would have. every time i went in there would only
be one guy in there. one man crew. has over 15 tanks thats over 300plus
he would need a staff of people to maintan right?but he has the nicest fish and super clear water. whats your guys take on this?

I don't believe they are "maintenance free" unless he has an automated water change system or they're all on drip.

agreed...the evaporation of the water in a pond, with a water fall and a drip system would be almost be maintenance free.

Agreed, or he is lying and doesn't take care of his fish.
Relax guy. don't jump to conclusions, just help him out.

Actually, there are at least one "water-change less filter systems" that I have heard of. I've seen one being tested via a friend who knows the guy who created the system. It involves a certain type of lava rock that supposedly houses bacteria to remove nitrates. We'll see how that goes.

Theoretically it is possible with plants removing nitrates - hydrophonic?

Still, mineral leaching can't be good for the fishes ...

I have never seen a maintenance free set-up. I have heard it is possible to release the water and add the water simulteneously, but that seems really wasteful. My father offered to do that for my outdoor set-up but i don't trust ground water that much (and its long term stability).

A truely huge outdoor pond (earth not concrete) would be maintenance free i think ... not very pretty though

thanks for responses, but the guy dosent sell any fish
and all his or most of his fishes are huge
to like maximum sizes
and his store has been around for more then ten years
honestly to clean like just one of his tanks would take hours
and by the time his finished cleaning all of them
he'd need to clean start cleaning that first one he cleand
