Major remodel: better way to change out gravel?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would do this but my parents would SCREAM at me if I got a new tank even I was going to sell the old one. Just to give you an idea of absurdity. I was offered about 200$ of equipment for aquariums a month ago. A few miscellaneous hob's a big 500w heater, skimmer, couple rimless tanks. A full 5g setup. 10g stand. For free. Because they were moving. They were my neighbors and they knew me well. About 300 feet from my house. My parents would not let me keep it & they made me give it back after my neighbors drove all the way over and handed it to me. So I gave it back. So about a week later I asked if i could get a 6g and they said yes but I had to pay for it myself. "We dont accept free things" not even if i was offered 20$ just to take it off their hands. So I asked if I could just pickup their 5g setup they left on the street because they left a few days before. They told me no, you must pay for it. I was confused as hell. Why pay for it??? I can get it for freeee... But in my house free things are not accepted. That's what my dad told me. I asked him if he won the lottery what he would do and he told me he wouldn't take the money. He'd rip up the ticket. I'm not talking about giving it all to charity just no thank you have a good day sir.

its a 10 gallon ? Get a bucket, empty everything (including water into said bucket) Walk tank outside, dump old gravel, put new gravel back in. Put everything from bucket back in tank....

50 lbs damn thats alot i only have 50 lbs in my 55 lol good luck though and my advise is its easier to ask for forgiveness than permission lol. with out this lesson i learned from my brother i would have not got into the fish hobby. i brought home a 55 gallon and fish and just set it up parents were not to happy expacally a year later a brought home a 120 then 3 months later (two months ago) i brought home a 125. they will for give you lol

Why was the tank so dirty in the first place? Are you keeping up on your weekly water changes? Use gravel but only about an inch to cover the bottom. If you are using sand get a sand filter. Also feed half of what you are feeding now to your fish.

Yea that's what stinks about gravel.. literally...crud gets trapped in it 24/7. I use a square net and just scoop it, as long as you have bio media then u can remove all ur gravel cuz the majority or ur bb shouldn't be in the gravel.

Go S. Vettel #1 rb8

The substrate actually has a good amount of bb. Removing this may cause a mini cycle.

Put fish in bucket
Put bubbler in bucket
Toss your smelly tankwater and scrub all algae off
discard puke gravel
Fill with new water and dechlorinater
put new gravel in there
Put fish back

+1 also don't touch the filter other than to move it and unplug/plug it. After the tank is finished cycling then you can resume maintenance on your filter. Make sure you clean the sand well before adding it to the tank

it's 10 gallons. What does that weigh with the water out of it? like 10 lbs? If that? Drain the water, take it to the nearest garbage can, and dump the entire contents out and clean it out in your tub. Sheesh, its not like you are removing 2" of sand out of a 300 gallon tank. THAT would be a pain.... This seems to be pretty straight forward... lol

Removing 2" sand from a 300 wouldn't be bad either. The magical wonders of a shop vac!
