Make a sump or buy a FX5?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just my opinion!!! FX5!!!!!! For fresh water setups i don't believe a sump is necessary, for salt water it is good for DSB's, NNR's(plenum) and hiding all the extra unattractive equipment of a SW tank. Also if you mean 33litre, it will cause problems for you.

I would go with the FX5, you just can't beat the ease of maintenance and it's one hell of a unit!

He's from michigan so I'm going to guess he meant 33long, not liters. I hear michigan still uses standard measurements.

That will make an equivalent floor space to a 55g. You could do better, but you could definitely do worse. FX5's are great a mech filtration, but so are power heads with a sponge hooked up. FX5 won't hold a match to a sump when it comes to bio.

They sell good overflows for like $30-$40. I would personally buy one over making it, but that's just me. It's not that I'm not a DIY person, I just like the look of the bought ones better. But the others are right, you can make one damn cheap.

Ofcourse, 33 long. Sorry, too many Rum's.

I told another fellow member tonight- pity you are so far away, i am giving a sump away!!!! ( or maybe for a carton, though i think you say case over there).

I would eventually get both if I were you.

W/D for skimming the surface water/ more bio filtration.

FX5 for mechanical/set the intake towards the bottom of the tank to suck all the crap from the fish.

This set up will neutralize the +/- of each and would be a great combo.

Well, after much thought, I'm going to get the FX5. I just feel more comfortable with a canister filter. If I ever upgrade to a tank bigger than 180 gallons I just may try a sump, but not now.

Thanks for all your opinions!
