makeing a small sump?

i was thinking of getting a canister filter for my 30g oscar tank(moveing when he gets bigger)but iam now thinking of makeing some kind of sump with a spare 10g so i could reach everything easyer and put more media ect, but iam not sure how to plum it to the tank or what would be the filter media would be? and was wondering if anyone could please give me some info?(or if anyone has pics of there sump)for a return pump i have a 380gph pond pump,
