making 125g into a turtle tank.

Turtleshack is not good (even though as I type this, there is an ad on this very page lol)!! They do indeed have a reputation of selling sick animals. I once purchased a Mississippi Map from them... it came in a shipping box. Thats all, just the cardboard. No insulation, no carrier within the box. Just the box, like it was a DVD or something. It survived the shipment but died of disease a week later.
There are a lot of good places to pick up turtles online. Check out turtleforum.com, there is a section of the forum that deals exclusively with finding reputable breeders. The above mentioned turtlesource.com is pretty good... I just acquired a nice florida snapping turtle from them about 6 months ago. Nice specimen.
As for tank mates, almost any slider or cooter will be ok as tankmates. Or you could always pick up another painted, there are several variations (western, eastern, midland, southern).

almost done with the tank just need for my dad to get out of the shower so i can finish filling up the 125.
Ran into a problem, i bought PVC pipe and drilled wholes in it to put the heather into it ever thins i had a 13" bullhead cat fish that smacked into it.
I am going with bare bottom instead of pea gravel as the substrate since it will be a lot easier to vaccum the poo and what not.
Am still on the hunt for a baby map turtle of some sort
P.S will get photos up proly in the morning cuz water will still be cold and he is really little.

Yes Turtleshack is the worst place online to order turtles from. I have heard good things about this site but never ordered from them http://www.theturtlesource.com/
really wanted to get a razorback musk, but the tank is filled pretty high due to the long heater and i know they tend to sit at the bottom i figured he would drown. The output from the fluval fx5 is pretty powerful then my little eastern painted runs into it , he shoots off and reminds me from finding nemo when the turtles are in the australian current thing.
You could go with around 4 turtles in total but as a grow out cause they are going to grow out of that in like 3 years. I have a 2,000 gallon turtle pool with easily 20 turtles and they are starting to get BIG, i'm going to need a to upgrade lol
