I'm about the same latitude as Toronto, and find bringing my fish (Uruguayan cichlids and decorative carp) in from mid Nov thru April is just normal practice. I have an approximately 1500 gal pond and a small 500 gal pond, and both freeze solid to the bottom in the depths of winter. In Nov I bring the fish and water lilies into the basement into a kiddy pool until temps become tolerable again in spring. Its also good practice to bring in the biological filters and keep them running throughout the winter.
