Making a shark tank

Why dont you just build the larger tank to begin with. It will save you money in the long run and you will have a much longer life out of the shark. Any time you are keeping a shark you want to give it as much room as you can and a four foot long tank is not going to give him enough room. I have seen these sharks pushing 3 ft long before.

A quick google search says that Coral Catsharks can reach 70cm, or 28 inches, which is not quite three feet, but well over 2. The Cortez ray can reach a length of 18 inches, with a 12 inch disk. Obviously, your hours of research werent very accurate, if i spent 5 minutes and got much different infor from various sites.

You could keep them in a 4 by 3 tank, but i doubt they would be happy. I would think a 6x4 would be the minimum footprint you should be looking at. Remember, in the wild, these fish have an entire ocean, even though they may not use it all.

I would like to do that, but how does water not rot the wood?

You seal the plywood with fiberglass & resin or one of the other sealers (search out plywood tanks here) or use a liner.

Just curious...How would you heat a S/W pond in your area.

Others...can we stay on track here and help with this project now that we realize there is an abundant amount of information on these critters.

I can see that you guys are more into shark bashing than helping me build a tank. I will figure everything out on my own.

I want the tank to be 4' long, 3' wide, 15" high. How much would that amount of glass be. I used a online chart and found out it needs 6 mm glass for that higth. Also what sealent should I use thats safe for SW?

Thank you in advance!

Dude come on, no one is shark bashing here just your research findings on the two fish. We're just getting you to rethink your tank dimensions. No one here can give you an answer on how much the glass will cost you if thats what you mean by "how much would that amount of glass be." Glass is priced by the square foot and sanding the edges by the linear inch. So going an extra 2-3 feet in length isn't going to add that much to the cost. Now you already know how thick the glass is that you need so call a few glass shops up and ask those two questions.
1. How much is 6mm glass a sq foot.
2. how much is it to sand the edges.
If this is an all glass tank the silicone is what you use to put it together. Go to www.garf.org and use the DIY calculator for building a tank. Its very simple you just enter the dimensions you want, what the tank is made of and it will tell you how thick you need the glass and all the cut sizes. Next time use the search tool on here its simple, clean and easy to use and its free.

one other thing. if everyone here is against the plan for this particular 4'x3'x15" tank, and advise you to go bigger, don't you think it'd be silly for them to help you with building an inadequate tank? for the bigger tank we all hope you'll build, 24" tall tanks usually need 10-12mm glass. 12mm advised for saltwater. the price of a 6'x36"x24" tank will be much greater than your 4'x3'x15", but that's what it takes to house these animals. i'd even go bigger because rockwork will limit the space actually available in the tank.
have you thought about going straight for a pond? would be much cheaper, better for the fish.
