every square inch of that tank HAS to have support. And good support at that. It's going to weigh close to 2000lbs when full.:nilly: SUPPORT SUPPORT SUPPORT. If you're not going to support every inch, you will probably have a broken tank.:WHOA:

would the stand be ok if the tank is hanging over the edges a few inches? i have a table thats is 5 ft by 25 in u think it would work?
Dont do it....

I would't risk it and chances are something will break and you have close to 200gals of water to deal with, not actually deal with but more like clean up. A 180 stand isn't to difficult to make. I made one for my glass 180 and this was my second stand I made. Making it look nice is the hard part. Check the DIY section. One piece I advice is don't make you stand too heavy, I did this and it took three total people to move it, no way two peope could do it safely. I over built it so much that it weight about the same or more than the glass tank empty.

how much do you think it would cost (roughly) for raw materials to build a good sturdy stand

Depending how fancy and nice you want it to look and what type of wood you buy, probably as cheap as $50(for just a basic stand with no doors but just a functioning stand) but more likely around $100-$200.
