On Friday I bought a 140G Gallon tank that came with two AC 300s, and I am also running a xp3. The tank is literally less than 5 feet away from my bed and was wondering if anyone has tips on how to reduce the noise the AC 300s make? I have cleaned them well and made sure everything is put together right but I still can't seem to get them quiet enough. I have a AC 300 on my 55G and it used to be in the same room and was much quieter than these ones. Could it just be the age of them?

What is the noise? Is it the motor/impeller of the filter or the water splashing?

It's a mixture of both. I have the water level up pretty high though so its barely noticeable. One of the filters makes a pretty bad vibration sound and water is coming out of the area where the intake tube goes. I don't know if this might be because I might have to much media in the cartridge and the pump cant pump all of the water through it so its coming back out intake area?

Do you have the cover on top of the filter?
thats where i notice most of the sound comes from.
i just put a big rock on top of the filter to keep the cover on tight.

Otherwise, you can try new impellers.
I have bought new AC filters, and some are alot louder then others.

They tend to quiet down over time as they "slime up". Also, much of the noise comes from the plastic covers. You could replace the covers with plastic wrap secured with a big rubberband.

get the aquaclear 50/200
so much quieter

i have 2 ac50/200 in my room and cant hear them at all.
i tried one ac 70/300 and i couldnt stand how loud it was.

Ya I know a lot of the noise can come from the lids so I tape them on tight which seems to help. It does seem like the majority of the noise is coming from the impeller so I will try replacing it and see what happens. Thanks for the help.

Ya I have had an ac50 and it is a lot quieter but I basically got these for free and I am planning on getting an fx5 at the end of the month so theres no point of buying one. I know Fx5's are supposed to be pretty quiet but I was wondering if anyone can compare the noise of the fx5 to the xp3?

I have 2 FX5's and a xp3. My first FX5 and xp3 are both really quiet but my newer FX5 has a motor hum to it. Not loud but more noticeable than my first one. Had my xp3 for 5 years and never had any problems with it.
