Making Bichir Food??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Polypterus senegalus, the longnose gar (Lepisosteus osseus) and the bowfin (Amia calva) had gulonolactone oxidase activity in the kidney and thus can synthesize ascorbic acid(VITAMIN C) (Journal of Fish BiologyVolume 57 Issue 3 Page 733 - September 2000)
So you don't need to add Vitamin C

Thank you beblondie! I forgot to add, if you use the vitamins and what not as a food soak, then soak it in the fridge for at least 4-6 hours.

If you're friends with a vet ask for a syringe and explain its to inject vitamins directly into the food altho with a balanced diet
including a quality pellet you really shouldn't have to suppliment-Anne

Back in the day when I made fish food, I used a good, old fashioned meat grinder. I knew I wouldn't be feeding my fish smoothies with that technology.

im thinking instead of using gelatin as a binder, just mess with the ratio of ingredients, imsure if you use a lot of shrimp and less of the other stuff, it will be more like a paste rather than a goop

hmm i'd think gelatin would be far better then just using shrimp as the binder. just go with the $1 or $2 for gelatin if you are going to make your own food.

just my opinion

It would only be a "paste" untill it hits the water, then it will be the goop. LOL

Awesome! I'm excited now. And tons of thanks for the egg-crate idea... I would have probably just made icecube size ones then thrown them on the ground after they froze until they broke and were bite size lol

Anne - 2 packets for what size blender? (I'm not really gifted in the kitchen unless you're talking about dessert foods).

This is going to be great - I have a lot of picky fish. They all eat shrimp but some LOVE worms, and some LOVE krill, and some just refuse to eat the other two. Now everyone will be happy, and I will be too :)

let us know how your new recipe works out.
i am interested in trying something like this.
good luck!!!

i've made my own food before i used a little bit of steak the parts with the least fat and shrimp, salmon, cod, crushed pellets of different types and earthworms i blended it and mixed it with plain gelaten and froze it they liked it but i would leave a film of fat on the top of the water so i stoped feeding them it but they liked it and grew fast but if you use steak theres no way to get rid of all the fat you just have to use the heart of the cow or its just to faty i kow the salmon didn't help either
