I feel like no matter what, I keep making mistakes keeping fish. I enjoy fishkeeping. I made some big mistakes building my pond filter and now I have to redo it. I learn from my mistakes, but it seems like I still make stupid mistakes quite frequently. Maybe I'm being too hard on myself, but I'm not sure. There are a few members here who act like they never make mistakes because they are experienced. I wouldn't consider myself a beginner fish keeper, but some people say that only beginners make mistakes and I don't think that is true. Let me know what you think.

Hello; At least two ways to learn; from making your own mistakes or getting information from others who have made the mistakes.
A clue that a person may not be too bright is making the same mistake over and over again.
I am often amused by posts dising on techniques considered as "old school". I guess they imagine the "modern" equipment and techniques somehow arose full blown from the mind of smart young people. Closer to the truth that things developed over time from mistakes being made and things being tried and the results being refined. I am also confident some clever insights happened along the way.
Back to mistakes. Get use to it. I make fewer now a days, been at this over 50 years, but still will make them. Usually when trying some new thing
With the creation of these electronic information forums you have access to lots of experience and the possibility to learn from others. Some things are critical when using this and other forums.
An important skill is to be able to read with understanding. So often I note that good information is present in a series of posts, but the OP with a question seems to be overlooking or misreading it.
Another thing seems to happen. The OP with a question seems to have already decided what they want the answer to be and keep rejecting answers which do not fit their preconceived ideas. Waiting for someone to say what they want to hear instead of actually considering a different point of view.

When I started keeping fish, some 30 odd years ago,I made lots of mistakes. I feel that back then we had an excuse. Information was limited to books and what we learned off the guy in the fish store. Looking back at those old books the information was often inaccurate and we know how good local fish store advice can be.
Today with the luxury of the Internet I feel there are little excuses for mistakes. If you want to know something you can normally get answers.
I feel most mistakes made today are caused by lack of self control by the keeper who just has to buy that fish without doing the proper research, or knowing that fish gets too big for his tank.

I don't look at them as mistakes. I look at them as modifications from my original intent
