Making my own driftwood! Help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When I found this score I couldn't boil it on the stove or bake it, too big, so I took a clean empty wheel barrow and filled it 2 pots at a time of boiling water, took awhile but eventually it was soaked, let it dry in sun for a week, then soaked it in plain old water and put in my tank, to this date no problems and the colors are awesome still.

I soak mine in a rain barrel or rubbermaid tub outside weighted down with bricks or other logs, until it stays down on its own, could take a week, could be months. It depends on the density/weight of the wood how long it takes.

I don't boil or bake, but before putting in a tank, I put a couple fry in with the wood. If they are still alive after a few days, I figure it's probably OK.

i dont have access to propane boiling equipment, so i think i am gonna try putting pots of boiling water into a trash can and then letting them dry in the sun. We'll see what happens. each piece is about 2x2x3, and going in my monster tank.

i use the garden hose to was it off then soak it in the bath tub. run the hottest water i can wait for it to cool a little so i can touch the water then scrub it real good with a plastic scrub brush. Rinse it, turn it, and let it soak again. repeat as much as necessary. Let it dry for a couple days. Weight it down as much as needed in my tank and just let it go. i would check it every couple months and see if it has sunk. my first pieces took 7 or 8 months to finally stay sunk.
This is them when i first set then up:
