Making Rocks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I’m currently taking a ceramics class as a college elective. I asked my prof is she thought that the glazes we use for food dishes would be ok in my fish tank. She said that they should be fine, so far I haven’t been able to find any info on making your own ceramic aquarium decorations. Hopefully I can figure it all out before the semester is over. If anyone has any info on ceramic pieces I would appreciate the feedback.

This is great stuff and I'm encouraged to go with my idea... hmm... I don't know if I ever shared that with you all. And if someone has the resources to beat me to it, great! Look for it in the Tank in a tank topic.

Hey I've got an idea. Why don't you first just make some ceramic vases, pots, etc. But don't use the glazes to give it an older look. Then break them, put crackes in them, stuff like that. Next put the peices in your tank. Finally you have your self a river bed, pond, lake, or whatever you want near an ancient settlement. It should endup looking great.

Hey all,
I'm currently using some pink insulation foam available at the 'depot to carve some rocks. Sray with several 'light' coats of spraypaint (to avoid dissolving the foam. Then mix up some epoxy (use a couple coats) and sprinkle some sand on the final coat.

cheers killahead, reckon i might have a bash at that, see if i can knock up somethin better lol

We've all seen the 3d backgrounds. We've all been to the aquarium and have seen these elaborate displays. We know fake reef systems are being made all the time. But now, I want to make my own rocks for two reasons. One I'd like the weight to be MUCH lighter than a real rock (if possible) for the annual cleaning processes. And 2, I want total control of the design.

I do not have access to the fiberglass materials reefmakers use. But I can get ahold of the foam. Can I use the foam in that capacity? Or are there other alternatives. The idea is to have ONE large structure that can be moved if ever I need to.

No clu
good luck
