$100+ for a 4-5 inch betta????!!!! - Thats insane....
I've never seen or heard of one that expensive.

Well, I am not sure if they can get them up to 5" yet but I have seen 4+". This is just the body size. The fins are larger making some fish 7" long with their fins. If I had the money I would buy one in a heart beat. I love bettas and it is worth the $ for me.

The GIANT Betta's are available all over WI. Usually found at PetCo, for $12.99, and have gotten a few at Walmart -* were labeled normal size female veil tale, but grew to be LARGE guys and girls..........my largest right now is 3", they tend to slow down in growth rate after a year or so. I feed them AQUA CULTURE Betta pellet food in a.m., and one or two frozen blood worms at p.m. (When I feed my Dragon gobys, I put a few aside for the other fish.) They are VERY aggressive, and I keep my larger Bettas in 5gl or + tanks. Can't even keep Mollies with them! Was going to try putting a Cory in with a Betta some day, but my Cory's are all under 1 1/2", too small right now.

Just FYI = all the Giant Bettas that have been for sale in my area really do look like females,......NO long beautiful fins or tails. After a while, I could recognize them pretty easily. = 1)They look like female veil tales, 2) When you have that plastic container in your hand and looking at fish in the lights....... it's charging and banging against the side of dish!, :grinno: It is NOT turning striped like a normal female Betta does when she's frightened, and hiding on the opposite side of the dish from your hand! The female Giant that I unknowingly bought at Walmart grew 1/2" in the first 2 weeks, while the rest of her female tank mates barely grew 1/4". I took her out and put into it's own 5gl. It's almost as big as the Giant male, (which I bought on purpose for $12.99). Not sure how things will go, since the male has never made any bubble nests, which the other normal males do all the time, when put next to a female. They both bang against side of their tanks at each other. Not taking a chance, won't be putting them together!

alwayswantedadragon, how can you tell that they're a giant betta and not a full grown adult veil tale?

nevermind, you ninja'd me and answered already

I'm definitely not an expert on anything. This is just what I've been through. What really s*cks, is that I had a Giant female, but didn't realize this. I tried mating it with a 'normal' male veil tail, my fav' blue/purple/aqua male. I didn't know that the 'normal' females were normally smaller than males. They were in a divided 10gl for 2 weeks. The male made some huge beautiful bubble nests, and 'she' watched his mating dance, and her stripes went in the correct direction for mating (there are horizontal and vertical = depending if she's afraid or it she's 'turned on' :).....I put her into his half of tank.....the only time she came even near his nest, she flew through it, making huge holes and wrecking it. 'He' worked time after time to repair it. Then chased her up to it, (where she is to let him 'squeeze' eggs from her), just to have her wreck it or turn and start chasing him! After watching this, they rest off and on, for over an hour, I saw he was getting nowhere with her, and was looking like cr*p. She, on the other hand, looked perfectly fine, unharmed. I separated them, of coarse.

a local petco had some of the 4" ones for 20 bucks each.
they labeled them Halfmoon king betta, right? those are actually giant Halfmoon Plakat betta! they can grow up to 5-6''. Those I saw in petco are low quality, most of them don't even have the 180 degree tail and may not grow up to 5-6''. You can buy Giant betta import from Thailand that can grow up to 6''(some 6.5 and not include the tail length) but they are around $100 each!:(
