Is it possible to use malachite green with rays? Some of the fish in my display have come down with ich and I cannot separate them. I do not have a heater on the system (it stays a constant 77 degrees without one) and I recently had an outbreak of ich. Some of my rainbows are showing spots, and my geos are covered. I've already lost a couple of my jurapari.

I have 4 rays, a male motoro pup, a female marble motoro pup, a male reticulated pup, and a male castex pup. The tank is a 380 gallon (8'x4'x1.5' tall) with a 150 gallon sump. I have heaters coming, but they won't be here until mid next week.

You're in a tough situation since you can't separate the rays. I personally wouldn't risk adding malachite green with rays, and I wouldn't recommend it either even in small doses. Finding temporary housing is the best and safest solution, and I'm sure someone will chime in and say they've used it with no ill effects, but that doesn't mean the same will happen with you.

A big Toyogo box and a canister filter (with established media) will be a good option (with very little feeding) for a very very short time.

Hope all goes well and keep us updated

UV, salt, and raising the temp is the only safe way to treat with rays, and even salt and high heat can be risky... Raising temp lowers oxygen drastically, and adding salt can whack your bio out if your not careful.
Like Raynado Raynado said, someone will chime in and say this is safe, that is safe, ect... Some people say paraguard is ray safe, while some people have had success with it I have not. I lost a pup in the process of a paraguard treatment for some other fish in the system before. Ate fine before dosing, I dosed per instructions on bottle next day pup dead...

Take it from me who has dealt with this before. Set up a hospital tank and pull out all the fish, leave the rays... it's the only thing that's really going to work for you. Don't risk it.

I've already added salt to the system, and I am going to try and to get the heaters as soon as possible. I will avoid the malachite green. I might try just pulling the 30 some rainbows and all the other fish. It just seems less stressful to have them all in a 40 gallon then the 4 rays in a 40 gallon.

If it makes you feel any better those rainbows are probably all going to be food at some point. Mind as well seperate them now if you want to save them lol!
My adult rays can and have taken down full grown adult geophagus and severums at 6-8". 30 Rainbows would be gone overnight no problem lol.
