bacteria and fungus. i love it! just bought a gal of it. treats 19,000 gallons!

It is only for light bacterial problems, cuts, scrapes, bites & popeye. Not for gaping wounds or severe bacterial infections but can be usied in conjunction with stronger meds in QT. It is the only med that will not disturb your biological filtration when used in your main tank, along with Pimafix, which is for fungal infections.

yup, melafix and pimafix- all posters above are correct.

I've personally had melafix kill off the biological filtration in one of my tanks. I luckily I have 10 other tanks that I can take biological media from.

Maybe I just got a bad batch, but if they can't keep the dosage consistent it's not something I'll use again.

I'm on my 2nd gallon in about 10 years. Maybe you overdosed? Diid you add any other meds? TeaTree Oil isn't harmful to the BB.

Nope. I was using the stuff in the pond bottle and actually dosing half because I was worried about my clown loaches since they're often sensitive to meds. I even made sure to shake it up really good like it says.

I only noticed the BB thing when one of my clowns died (either related to the Melafix itself, or the ammonia, not sure) and I tested the water. Nitrates were almost nonexistent, nitrites 0 and ammonia was at .25.

This tank had been set up for several months and no other chemicals had been added, water had been tested previously with 0 ammonia 0 nitrites and the presense of nitrates.

All I can figure is maybe this bottle had way more tea tree oil in it than it's supposed to. Tea tree oil is a strong antibacterial, so there's no reason in sufficient amounts it couldn't hurt the biological bacteria.

The Pond Melafix is extremely concentrated--1 drop/gallon.

I know. It says how much to use per gallon on the bottle and I was using half of what it said.

I have the bottle in my hand now and it says 1 tsp (5ml) per 50 u.s gallons.

This was a 75g tank and I was using a half teaspoon, which isn't even half dose.

It surprised the heck out of me because I hadn't had a problem with it before, but now I just stick with plain old antibacterial meds like Maracyn if I have an issue.
