malafix

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm not sure what happened then but I can be pretty sure it wasn't the Melafix. I swear by the stuff & have been using it since it 1st came out. I even have used it daily for a week on my discus tank on several occasions.

If you mean Melafix it can be used to treat cuts, pop eye, fin rot, dropsy, etc. I believe its an all around good med to keep around if you dont already have a bottle. Only downfall is it smells like Vicks vapor cream and takes a while to go away.

Hehehe...yeah, it smells bad and stains your water with the smell.

I happen to like that smell! Vanilla makes me sick though.

I have never had to use Melafix (Nor can I find it) This thread is probably one of convict breeders few threads where it hasnt gone haywire. Somethings wrong.

I'm 100% positive it was the melafix. Anything else would have effected the other tanks since anything but meds I use on all my other tanks, aside from the SW.

I still have the bottle and as an experiment I can stick a biowheel on an extra tank with no fish, use ammonia to fully cycle it and then start adding the melafix and see what happens.

The only other thing I can figure is that that tank was lightly stocked at the time so there wasn't much biobacteria in the first place so the melafix didn't have to kill much off. Either way it's not supposed to effect it in the least, so I refuse to use it.

Just had to point that out didn't you!

Melafix is pretty good for scapes/bites that my cichlids get occasionally, but I have never used it on extremely serious conditions.

The marketing of Melafix is a joke. It is pushed as practically a cure-all. At the most, it can sooth minor injuries (scrapes, nipped fins, etc.), but any trained professional would tell you not to count on it for much more.

The much hyped tea-leave extract is no substitute for antibiotics, and many fish have died from easily cured diseases when their treatment was left to Melafix.

It works great for what I have used it for. Never had an emergency or horrible gash/infection on my fish, where I've needed more. Mostly bites, frayed fins, discolorations, scrapes, etc. You can also use it in conjunction with any other meds, for faster results/healing.
