Thanks guys I think I am going to do a mix of weighted fake plants and live plants in the South American biotope as my LFS can actually custom make a fake plant for a biotope aquarium. They look even better than the commercial brand fakes 
By the way Jolseen, my uncle has kept south americans for years now and has never had a problem with them uprooting the plants as long as you give the plants time to grow their root systems to a nice size.
