Hey there all! I've put Malaysian bogwood in my tanks before and had it turn the water brown but I've now been taking out and putting in freshwater continuously for two weeks. This is in a newly set up 27 gallon tank. Within two days or replacing 50% of the water the water is a dark tea color again. I've never had wood continually color the water this much. How long should I expect this to go for? The piece was large but not massive by any means. Any thought from your experiences?

its releaseing tannins, just keep up the water changes and add carbon to the filters, sometimes this color can even be disireable, in the case of black water. it should go away within a week or so, 50% a day should do it

ive had my wood in my 55 gal for a few months now and the water is still colored with tannins, just depends on the wood.

I have had three pieces in my tank for a year and this is still a problem. Not as bad as early on, but not crystal clear like I like it. I have been building my collection of tank rocks to replace the driftwood. If you are in NJ and want some cheap driftwood let me know.

Same problem here. Had a large quantity in my 58 for nearly a year, always had brown tinted water. Took it out last spring to soak in a 45 gallon trashcan, with an old Penguin powerhead. I'm still soaking and changing out water, and it still looks like French Onion soup. I'm considering drying it all out, coating it with epoxy and calling it good--my tank's been bare for too long.

Thanks for the idea on boiling it. I have never heard of that but makes sense. If problem persists for another week, into the pot she goes. Thanks again. Much appreciated.

Don't wait another week. Just go ahead and boil it. Its the first thing that I do when I bring any wood home. You will be surprised at how brown the water will be when you are done boiling it. The wood will continue to leach a little bit of tannins into the water, but nothing like what you are experiencing now,

just rememver, it's not just your wood releasing those tannins.. your substrate is as well.

I will take the advice and boil. Thanks again. Hope this clears up that little 27 gallon tank. I wanted to wait until it cleared up before adding fish. This sounds like it will expedite the process.
