Malaysian Trumpet Snails... Got 'em ??

Does anyone know if they'll clean the algae off of plant leaves? That's the only place I have algae and my plecos won't touch the leaves. I don't care if they nibble on the leaves a bit, as long as they focus on the algae.

No, I don't think they clean algae.

Actually, based on my observations, MTS may digest the "undigested portion" of the poop similar to what fish do which is why in general, snails are often misunderstood to eat poop when they really don't. The same thing is also misunderstood with goldfish and plecos.

As far as algae is concerned, I fed my MTS balls of green filamentous algae I grabbed from my ponds and they start gathering on it to munch them to nothingness within a few hours. They however will not eat diatoms or green spot algae. That's the nerite snails' job.

I think they are fine.I put a few in one of my tanks a few years ago now Im pretty sure there are at least a few in every tank. The only time they (and ramshorns) get out of control is in pleco fry tanks. The extra food and slow eating of the fry leaves too much food available to them.

You'll probably need only one or two. They prefer to eat solely on algae and replenishing constant supply of algae is very important. Having fewer nerites is better than too many. It's a PITA once the algae is down to zero. They seldom take well to other foods. A few are lucky theirs can eat pea flavored gel food and cucumber slices (including mine).
