Had a friend from another forum (and on this one also) tell me he'd found some MTS locally (he lives about 45 mins from me) at a Petco/Petsmart (forget which)... They had tanks overrun with them, and wouldn't give them away or sell them.

They said it would be illegal to do so, as they are classified as parasites... I've never heard of such a thing. We're in Indiana, and some Google searching didn't help me at all...
Any other Indiana fishkeepers have an answer? I don't even know where to start looking about specific lists of banned animals, other then Zebra Mussels and Snakeheads that are listed in the fishing regulations...

could be.
around here petsmart used to give them away, but people would get *%^#& when they wouldn't let them pick out specific ones, or wouldn't stop helping paying customers to grab them the free snails. maybe they just don't want to deal with the hassle.
on the plus side, they are pretty hardy, mine survived a ride home in my pocket, no water needed.

It's pointless to made them illegal. But its possible that they are thinking of another snail species that look like a MTS.

They are on the proposed/regulated list on the Wisconsin DNR website, I checked Indiana, and there are 2 mystery snails, and the New Zealand mud snail, but I didn't see Malay snails.
Just google your DNR, invasive species.

Ok, I might just give them a call in the next couple of days. I googled various forms of "Malaysian trumpet snails illegal in Indiana", using full name, MTS, illegal, banned, regulated, etc. Didn't think to include DNR.
Thanks!

Yea, the Petsmart in Bloomington, IN told me they couldn't give them away because of company policy and it was illegal to do so. I went up north today to a different Petsmart and got a few, they even put it in a clear plastic baggy with water like they would with fishes.

Company policy? Not sure, but I suspect the city of Bloomington that tends to lean a certain way political may have something to do with it.
