Male and female for sure? Dovii

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
all the information i have found say this. costa ricans are yellow. i have a 2" f1 costa rican growing out myself. from what i understand the costa rican males are supost to be blue backed and blue tails the rest is strong yellow. at least that is what i was told and seen from pics.

Ye that's what iv heard too. So I'm pretty sure mines a nic. I don't know I the body shape had anything to do with it or not.

Heres a little update on the boy (the keeper) im not keeping the femalr not because theyre ugly but because i dont want to inbreed. If i do ever breed this boy i rather have different blood. I have a costa rican boy growing so hopefully i will have both types growing up to be glass banging monsters:) although im still confuse as to the yellow vs blue variant nicaraguan. I have another dovii at 4" who has the marking and spots above likea male but its super yellow. Is this the yellow varient? Im still confused.

The light in my tank only brings out reds and oranges so his blue is washed out.

definitely male and female. I understand that you might not want to keep a sibling female but ill let you in on a lil secret i use to pull out potential in most of my fish:) put those two in own tank all by themself. something like a 4' tank, maybe a 55g.. i dunno what you have available. then divide them and i am willing to bet within a few weeks or less that male is puttin on great color. also try and use darker gravel but not all black;) once he colors up feel free to do whatever with the female:)

basically if it is all blue with faint yellow in it, it is a nic. if it is only blue back and finned with a strong yellow body, then it would be the costa rican. from what i get that is the diff between the veriants.

So raise him with a sibling female? Does this not work on color when introducing a female later? So should i leave his sisters with him?

Also the last two pcs above are the same fish. The male.

And do u recommend blue gravel?

The info about the Nic vs Costa Rican and being able to tell the difference is just speculation. I've raised tons of dovii from 3different location points and it can be very difficult to tell the difference if there is any in domesticated dovii. Now of course it is or might be possible to distinguish to differences within wild caught specimens.

What I was sayin earlier was to divide him with only one of the females If you want him to color up now instead of later. In doing this you will allow them tp establish their own territory's safely and build their confidence and possibly start displaying sexual interest towards each other which will speed up the time you'll have to wait for him to color up and personality to come out. I've done this technique on more than a few occasions with juvenile/sub adult fish and yielded success 99% of the time:)

Any samples pics? All my dovii are from wild parents. Although im finding it difficult to raise even one that look like one of the extremely blue store bought ones ive seen here like jagsters.

Ok im gonna raise the sibling alone then. And as for my smaller new batch i will add a sister to my 2-3" boy as soon as they catch up to his size. He left them in the dust, the others are still 1"
