Meet my first hybrid, Crush.

He(?) was an impulse buy for 50 bucks, at around 6.5 inches TL. He is now 8.5 TL 2 months later. His vent appears male to me but I am new to flowerhorns.
A week ago, I noticed a white blob that appeared to excrete from his privates. Happened quick so I'm not sure. When cleaning his tank, I found several of them, as large as his poo. (Sorry, no pic) They don't look like the typical white stringy feces, as I had a failed attempt at EBJD, so I know what they look like. These are more gelatinous. His behavior is normal, and has no loss in appetite or energy. Lives alone in a 65.
I know females will sometimes lay eggs in the absence of a male. Do males do the same? Has anyone seen this before? Should I worry? Maybe he is getting excited as my Carpintis pair in the next tank over is preparing to breed.

Thanks. He had been at the LFS for awhile and apparently wiped out 20 sun cats one night and had bitten every one in the store. He has calmed down alot and enjoys being petted now. Even allows a 1 inch carpintis (attempted feeder) to live in harmony with him, for now anyways.
As far as the white blobs, nothing hanging out ever. Could it be his diet? I feed Massivore, NLS, frozen krill and bloodworms. It really looks like blobs of male stuff but firmer.

One other question. I can find similar looking FH, jin kangs they are I believe. Including one of yours ,beantickler, if I remember right, that really excited me about my what mine will grow into. But my guy looks backwards in coloring. Does this he is not JK? Or is JK more a generic term? Would he be worth breeding with a carpintis as an experiment?

I would call this a JK for sure... Yours is WAY higher quality then mine was for sure... I think crossing this fish to a pure species would be like taking a step back for him... JK have been known to be fertile but dont be surprised if he isnt... Fader males in general r infertile but like I said JK could most definately reproduce. I would like to see this fish crossed with SRT female imo... I think that is the best cross for this fish... Maybe a kamfamalau would be a nice cross also...

$50 was a steal! Very nice fish.

Thanks fobrinkle. Beantickler, maybe I'll try him with a carpintis to determine if he is fertile and then go from there. I have a carpintis factory right now, and I would hate to risk losing another expensive fish to fighting unless I knew it could work. I didn't realize he was high quality. Any ideas as to what a cross with a kamfamula would look like? Still learning all these varieties.

Sorry had to show off my carpintis male too.

Nice JK im looking for a nice one i have a few to grow out. I hope they turn out this nice and I would find a nice fader female to breed him with it does not matter what kind just as long as she is a nice looking fader. That price for that fish is a steal hope he is fertile.

Not a clue as to how they would look... My boy blue is a kamfamalau. I dont really get to see too many high quality females. Not even over at flowerhorncraze... They r tough to come by... I think SRT may be the best bet for this guy + I bet you would get alot of buyers for this cross...
