looks like a possible case of dropsy. is he becoming inflated after feeding? my betta used to inflate a little after eating, this is quite a bit larger than mine though. i notice he's in a bowl and i should imagine its not a help!

looks kinda similar to bloat
but i am not sure of it though, don't know whether bettas get bloat

Bettas can get intestinal bloat. Which looks like this. I saw on another forum I tend to browse a betta that had intestinal bloating that ruptured through his skin and caused a prolapsed stomach... almost recovered before he randomly died.

I would put him in a salt bath for an hour with 1 tsp per quart of water. While he is in this dip add about 1 tsp per 5g to his tank (so won't be very much for most betta tanks). This sounds like a lot of stress, but will really help out that bloating. A slim possibility is that it's just constipation, and this method will cure that up real quick.

I have a question - too late but for future reference - i had a 6" rainbow shark that its belly seemed to swell to the size of a golf ball - then he died - is that bloat what could have I done for him

Bloat or dropsy I'd treat for dropsy as that abdominal region looks pretty swollen.

I forgot to add, this has to be epsom salts, not hydrosodium chloride. and HCL dip of that magnitude would kill any FW fish. A slightly lighter dose, however, works for bad cases of ich.

4kidsnomoney, if it is just bloating (like malawi bloat or constipation), then yes. I can never hurt to try, as epsom salts are a natural laxative and will help relieve any bloating. Even if it doesn't cure, it will provide short term relief to the fish.

thanks for all the replies....she got it to eat peas with no problem and ive been forwarding ya'lls comments to her...thanks bunches....epsom salt will be her next method if the other does releive it. :)
