Thanks..... The male is actually the bigger of the two about 11 inches versus around 9 for the female..... I keep them in a 120 gallon.... My original plan was to keep a male solo in that tank.... But I had gotten the female first... then when after I got the male they did not coexist well. she was aggressive and tore into him some ......I put a divider up and a couple months later after they got used to each other and I could see she was ready to I removed it and they spawned ..then it was the male who nearly killed the female.. The male was beating himself up trying to get at her even with a divider placed back up... so I then moved her to a 75 gallon..( which spawned in there with male Texas cichlid and produced fry) I had them separated for almost a year before I brought them back together again around late October... They've been spawning on the regular ever since ...They get along better but still need a divider from time to time... I like to keep my fish almost flawless which is kind of a contradiction when you have large cichlid pairs:)... I have a 150 gallon that I've been deciding on whether I want move them to...that tank currently is also divided with a large male midas and 3 of the texas/jag hybrid offspring.....

Same here, my male and female jags are in a 120as well, only a 12" gar with them.the male digs a lot uprooting the fake plants ,tearing them from the wieghted bases. So they float to the top I leave them floating the gar loves to hang out in them and the jags rarely even look at the gar.nice to have one fish that's there but not there to the jags at the same time

Chef will.. I know you are trying to quote and reply but it came in 1 post quote... Happened to me before too .@$#% phone apps...
what I think drew me back to jags after many years in addition to their size and looks is you can at least keep something in there with with them.. tank mates are tolerated more so than other large cichlids .. Jags seem content to dominate but not necessarily annihilate other fish... They are not as territorial outside of spawning as my other favorites like say red devil ,midas or even Texas cichlid....ime..... Although I know this could vary from fish the fish..

I put the siphon in his domain ...darkened and attacked it....

Yes they are very smart.... I can almost see him thinking ...first go for the siphon then start looking at the hand and realize that the hand is attached to the siphon and if he gets the hand he can stop the siphon from coming in too....
