jaw locking and he started seriously beating on the female. the female went into fright colors and was getting chased around the tank.
plus the male turned all dark and his eyes went all red (evil mode??). no choice... i didnt want to risk a dead female.

jaguars should always have red eyes, and this is typical breeding behavior, and a bigger tank wouldn't hurt, like say a 125.

You did the right thing dividing them. This can be a regular occurance with cichlids, being the male wants to spawn again but the female is not ready. Nothing to worry about, just keep them divided until the female shows signs of being ready to spawn again.

exactly what i did, when the male< who got his ass kicked, decided he wanted to mate, he knocked down the divider in my tank. LOL

thanks for the feedback guys.
i think i'm going to keep them in separate tanks for a while.
need to figure out how to raise their ginormous family before they decide to double their population again...

I have a big tank for your male :D. Seriously, I hope it works out. If not, I have a 12" female that he could try and beat up :D

The jag I bought from Brian turned out to be a female :(

i use egg crate to divide my pairs...i cut out a hole just big enough for the female to swim thru when things get to rough. then when the male calms down, she can swim back.
