Agreed. Male motas can be major killers. They get fairly big too. My male is about 10 inches SL.

So there is about 3 inches more to the tail tip? I always thought motags got a little bigge than freddies and loiselleis.

Yes, about 3 more inches including the tail. Maybe a foot total length.

Here's a recent video of the male mota on youtube:

I think the motas do get bigger than both loisellei and freddies. I've never kept a male friedrichsthalii, but the male loisellei I had for several years maxed out at about 8" total length. I've seen pics of huge freddies though. My male motaguense is still fairly young, so I think it still has some growth left in him.

My male is out begging for food all the time but not quite as owner responsive as a midas or my jags.

I've tried to breed him twice and both times ended up with dead females. They can do a lot of damage VERY quickly with those teeth and the victims are usually severly ripped up.

I've had 9" TL freds before and they were only 2 years old. Not to mention in my office tank (no food on weekends or holidays and less water changes than tanks at home). So I'm not sure if you can really say any of the 3 species get much larger than the others. I think a friend's male loisellei was close to 10" TL, but I'm not sure how old it was.

I don't know, Ken Davis says he has a 14" Rio Copan Motaguense and Mo's fish is 11 inches at 2 years old. Ken's fish is one year older than Mo's motag, or it may have been caught one year before Mo's was.

my motag is a straight up dickhead.
hes 6in TL and bit me and drew blood worse than a foot long midas.
he pierced the skin.
it was terrible lol

only thing mine has'nt killed is the java moss. seriously aggro. i think he will be going into his 120 solo unfortunately. i may try a large pleco but i doubt it. why risk another fish, he is my favorite but he seriously limits my fish collecting. btw he is under 5 in. total length, and i have'nt tried anything with him since he was under 3 in.
