i say male at that size if it was a female it should show some black in the dorsal fin.

Looks to be a boy. Just a fatty. As already stated, females have a black blotch in the dorsal.

Here's my 5" female H. carpintis "Escondido". Note the dorsal fin.

thanks for the help! the blotch isnt so obvious with these guys like it is with other cichlids or mine are all male! I'll try to post some of what I thought might be female.
also, anyone let me know if your carpintis peels or molts. mine seem to be flaking off some light skin from there sides. ????

Very nice Carpinte. Looks to be a very chunky male. The steep incline to the forehead is another indication of a male.

I don't think any cichlid should have flakey or peely skin...
