Male dempseys tend to have larger and longer fins, more pearling on the body, and no color on the gill. Females have shorter fins, thicker bodies and lower centers of gravity (weight is carried below a straight line drawn from the mouth to the middle of the tail), smaller heads and foreheads, and most show solid blue on their lower gill covers.
