Male or female dovii??

Male, easily male. check out its wicked colors on its gills and body shape no female dovii can achieve this at 3 inches. Though this specimen barely has any spots? therefore there's a possibility that it could be female

But if you say it gets spots when it flares, then its a male. Never ever had a female dovii get spots when they are fighting or flaring. Nice male, can't wait to see an update in the future :D
 
That's the biggest out of the 8 that I have I think out of the 8 six have nice color coming in on their gills is that a good way to tell sex?

No that is not even a way to tell males from females. From the pic I can't tell. Look for spotting in the unpaired fins. That is the best way to tell at that size. I would expect to see more spotting in the body if it was a male. Females will show spotting in the body also. The fastest growing out of a bunch can be an indication but that can also be wrong.
 
I did breed my dovii for a while at smaller sizes looking at stomach shape can be an indicator males have kind of sunken or flat while females usually rounder. Both males and females can have color in their face at a young age males just have more. The coloring is all gonna come down to genetics. I would say yours is a male going from body shape
