Male or female jack Dempsey?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I could. But it's not heated so they would die. Unless I put them in when they are full grown adults in the summer and maybe they could adapt to the temperature. That would be so cool! Coldwater cichlids!

My theory wouldn't work though lol not possible in one summer

No no no what i think theyre trying to say is dont put a bichir with jds period. Not mow or later. You will end up with a dead or eyeless bichir. #2 i have come in late on this thread and read all six pages and best i can gather is your truing to get ahead of yourself. Bottom line 55 is for jds and dithers only! #3 get rid of everything you cannot keep long terms, oscars ect. Dont get fish on the thought "ill upgarde later" chances are you wont because you dont have the means. They wont stop making oscars, when you have a big enough tank trust me there will be 100s of oscars, sens, and everything available at every petsmart. BE patient! Decide what you want. Not i might, or maybe if, no. You want to breed jds go nuts, but dont settle for a bad female for the beautiful male. Dont buy jd after jd after jd. Search around, dont settle for any based on size. A unhealthy female is not a good breeding female. Clean everything out. Keep your male. Then shop around for that one perfect female. Learn how to vent, and sex correctly and do it at the store, not buy 3 crappy ones and ask and ask and ask. Either way you dont want to breed them so young. Patience is everything in this hobby especially breeding. So decide! Do you want to breed or do you not like the idea of "wasting" tank space on two fish. It seems you want your cake and eat it too. Your not quite ready to give up a community tank but your dead set on breeding. In your 55g for now, today and what will probably be the next months and years you need to choose. Community or breeding. Also be ready where your going to put the fry? Not 30 theyre not guppies, but 100s with a big enough pair. What are you going to do with babies? I hope they will be feeders because you most likely wont be able to even give jd fry away. No your lfs probably wont trade them in. And when your two weeks into raising the ones you removed your pair will have a new batch. Now what? Kill em all? Your lfs might take like 10 tops.

My 2 cents and a half.

It’s male. Because of the shape of the head area makes me to say like that .

That's not an accurate way to sex jd's. The best way is to watch them while breeding, next is to properly vent the fish, and the last accurate way is to check for splotchy spangles on the lower jaw/chin area.
