Male or female?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
haha yea the there are multiple heaters in the tank. and I'm pretty sure it is in fact a female. my male in the take has many mating signs and now my silk has started as well.

Nice! Congratulations(you've got a pair now right?)!

How about some pictures :)

Nice FHs! That's a sweet picture :)

Notice the difference in head shape? I'll say right now that I don't have any experience with flowerhorns but that's probably a good indicator IMO.

so if it was a male. would my male RD be doing the twitch most other cichlids do when its time for breeding? also when the divider was not there then stuck very close to each others side facing opposite ways going in circles? im just curious to why they would be doing that if they were both males.

Very hard to say. Simply because structurally, that's a male structure fish. But I've seen quite a good numbers of male body structure fish that is a female(own one myself as of now). In terms of male shaking its head and what not, don't use that to determine if your fish is a male or female. Some males are calm towards different fish, gives a little warning(head shake) and leave it at that. When they see a different male, they may act totally different going all furious. If you want to know for sure, let them lose...just have a net in ready.
P.S. - Most males who see another female goes all nuts like a dolphin in your fish tank.

hey BIG_ONE. so i did actually pull the divider. and they did lock jaws but didn't seem to extremely aggressive like they were trying to kill each other... they gently grabbed each others jaw and then played tug a war for a bit then would go directly next to each other and swim in circles together. is that a mating behavior? or are they actually fighting?
