male peacock cichlid..with eggs?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
lol. I've bred 7 kinds of peacocks in the last couple of years; also have three OB peacocks in the community tank..... Still can't tell males from females for jack.

From what I've seen, the only ways to tell are these:

-Vent them.
-Watch them do the dance to see who's grabbing eggs.

My guess is that you have a female, my friend.

yeah i think you are right. ugh I might just return the fish, i was assurred it was a male and i dont really want a drab female if i could get a male, not to mention ill have to deal with all the eggs and fry.

I have a female O.B.Peacock whose color is unbelievable. I got her as an orange blotched O.B. when I got her she was about 21/2 ". Now she is about 4". She has 5 egg spots & a fair amount of blue on her head, tail, dorsal & tail fins. It is very common for O.B. females to get egg spots. It is a trait that is common in Mbuna females. I have stripped my O.B. female 3 times & she has produced many fry. She is one of my most beautiful & colorful fish.:headbang2

I would say it could honestly be a dominant female. I bought a red reuben peacock male that was actually a gorgeous female who already hatched some fry. I also have lots of OB peacocks and while I would say the males tend to be the more beautiful I can also say that since its a hybrid I've noticed the sexing is kinda up in the air. I have some ugly guys and gorgeous girls.

Don't get too upset, but this happens in humans as well.

Don't sweat getting a male too much... as others have noted already, with O.B. Peacocks you aren't guaranteed that the male will be the more colorful fish. I've seen verified males (heck, I've owned a couple) that weren't as attractive as your female.
