without venting you cant be 100%,but judging by body profile and head shape i would say female.even withouta hump males still have a taller more bulkier profile.

He/she was a pain in the rear to catch but finally got him/her out of the tank and got these 2 shots. So what's the verdict...I've never claimed to be a venting expert lol

btw, regardless I am very happy with this fish. I think it has beautiful colors which are only getting brighter by the day.

I know what you mean, you can tell this in other species as well. Seeing him/her in person I've always thought it had the bulkier, taller bodied male-ish body profile. Maybe the pics distort the body ratio...idk. Let's just see what the verdict is now with the vent pics.

looked at pics again and i might have to agree,he just doesnt have a male profile,but nothing is 100% in sexing a fish except venting,good luck with him
well he clearly has a lot of growing to do. plus I found out a few weeks ago that the heaters haven't been working like they used to so the tank had only been at around 66-68 F for about 2 months and that drop in temp really affected their appetites. I was able to finally get a couple new heaters for this tank and my 75 and the temp is now back up to the 78-80 F range. Their metabolism is increasing back to normal as well as their appetites so I wouldn't be surprised to see a bit of a growth spurt in the coming months.
