males in the same aquarium

I have two males (1 leo, 1 motoro) together with 3 females in a 1000 gallon pond. I've never seen any aggression or injury. Any theories on why it works for some and not for others? Is it a matter of space available? Or is it just individual personalities? Or both?

Got to come down to space surely?

IF that was the case all my males wouldn't work together.... I have a 180 and a 150 that both house 2 males no females, and my big tank has 4 males in it right now, haven't had issues with any of them.

I'd say it's a combo of things including individual personalities.......

I have 3 males in a 500 with two females, no issues bn the Henlei male n the marble but motoro had to be separated out w a decider because he was biting the other two

I wouldn't be surprised if there are a bunch of other variables that contribute along with space and personality. I'm wondering if the presence of females makes males more aggressive. And maybe size difference between the males? Maybe temperature also? I've read raising the temperature can trigger breeding. Maybe keeping rays cooler lowers aggression? Male aggression may be species dependent as well.

Anyway, it's interesting to speculate.

I think it all spends on the males

If they have grown up with other males and both matured around the same time it can work

My old male p14 would put up with any mature male
I placed small non mature males in with him and he showed no interest in them but as soon as the claspers would start to roll he would start attacking

My male Leo now has started to do the same

My male bdxleo has tried to kill male motoros and a male hystrix. Yet in another tank he was smaller then the other males and he didn't have an issue with several males.

I had 3 males together (Motoro and hystrix) and they all got along fine.

A buddy has several males without much issue from males. He has one male that will kill other rays randomly on occasion.

No my bdxleo was mostly mature at the time. My male hystrix was mature and the motoros were not mature.

My friend has several mature males together. Breeding size, not sure if they are breeding right now. I know he has a few black males in with the one big one that has killed. He also has a large white base pearl male with a mature p14 male. I believe he also has several smaller males in with them all as well.
