I've used dithers a number of times with certain fish and tanks that are located in 'quieter' areas of my house where there isn't as much traffic and fish aren't watched as much. Having the dithers out and about in tank giving the impression that everything is ok can bring the others out of hiding. 'Overstocking' isn't always the answer to getting your fish out and reducing aggression either, as you can run into much bigger problems with that (not enough filtration, and just a mix of fish that is WRONG!). I often use dithers in with some of my Tangs b/c the dithers simply keep the Tangs out in the open more, and are not chased themselves.

For dithers, I've used everything from Australian rainbows to tiger barbs and serpae tetras; the dither you use depends on what outcome you're after (aggression reduction or getting fish out in the open).
