I just came across this on Animal Planet while channel surfing. It's about the African rock python explosion that is supposed to be terrorizing south Florida.

By explosion, they mean a few hundred rock pythons; the rock pythons are restricted to a very small area while the Burmese pythons occupy a slightly large area.

They are saying that the rockies are starting to move out into other areas.

Ive seen them before twice. Southish glades is their new home. ^and I don't understand why that makes a difference. They still terrorize native wildlife. BUT, the show you're talking about is reallllly interesting. Wasn't there a similar one on those giant rats that are for now restricted to like plantation key.

Giant rats, are you/they talking about the nutria?......

My point is that people freak out when they see these shows, and we get bans on these snakes. Dogs, cats, and other introduced mammals mature, reproduce, spread faster, damage the environment more, and kill more people than these snakes yet few people find an issue with them.

Which is why I wonder what the real intent of these shows are.....sensationalism/hysteria or accurate programming.

That's been popular on a lot of animal planet and wild discovery shows lately. I haven't quite seen them talk about an "explosion" of them but they sure do seem to show up a lot more on the shows where you have the folks going out on animal calls, everglades runs, etc. Don't know how much of that is accurate or just over played, but there is more and more of it lately.

^ My area has endangered birds and small wildlife that are going into threatened status, and thought to be wiped out in certain areas, thanks to cats. Not knocking cats, I love cats, but populations of native animals are getting wiped out and people are going hysteric over snakes but not cats? People didn't go into hysterics over the packs of dogs that killed everything they caught out where I used to live in TX (granted, we usually just shot them ourselves to protect livestock, but still). It seems very selective when they make a lot of these shows.
