WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. -- Newly filed court documents say two young men who went missing in northern Wisconsin were abducted by another man, chained up at his rural house and sexually assaulted before one managed to escape and get help.
Forty-six-year-old Edward Lanphear of the town of Saratoga is being held on $1 million bond.
Online court records don't show any formal charges filed against him yet, and Wood County District Attorney Todd Wolf hasn't responded to a message seeking comment.
Sheriff's investigators filed affidavits asking a court commissioner to find probable cause to support Lanphear's arrest.
According to those documents, Lanphear abducted a 23-year-old town of Grand Rapids man early Saturday morning and a 21-year-old man sometime Sunday or Monday. The 21-year-old managed to escape and go to a house across the street still wearing chains.
Police were called, and officers who went to the scene found the 23-year-old in the basement.
He was treated at a hospital. The affidavits don't give information on medical treatment of the 21-year-old.
Lanphear told investigators he knew what he did was wrong, according to the documents.
A message left at a phone number in Lanphear's name was not returned when The Associated Press tried to reach someone representing him for comment.
A spokeswoman at the Wood County Jail who refused to give her name declined to release any information on whether Lanphear had a lawyer. She confirmed that Lanphear is in custody.
The Associated Press identified the 23-year-old man in a story on the case before the sexual assault allegations were made but is no longer doing so because it does not generally identify people who are alleged victims of sexual assault.
