.....yeah, every bone in my body tells me just walk on by, but I'll be damned if my lfs doesn't have a beautiful jag for sale. I've never kept one (and actually don't really plan on it either), but I do have a large tank with a 5 cichlids in it and a group of smaller loricariids. Does anyone have experience keeping one successfully in a large (300 gallon) community? Two other things to consider as well. First she's huge at around 8-10" and second, well she, is a she. Two things that sound off alarm bells is that I already have a female freddy, and although the pattern is not the same it is similar, and secondly some of the plecos are only around 3-4", but there is TONS of wood and cover in the tank.

So I go back and forth and I have to go there to pick up some plumbing parts, so i'm trying to not impulse buy, but she's a beauty and I'm a sucker for a jag even as common as they are. As it is right now, I'm not going to, but the little devil on my other shoulder is really convincing sometimes........

Convince me one way or the other. Cichlids are Midas(8-10"male)Freddy(8"female) JD(8" male) Festae(6"female in my avatar) Con(4") and a new Argentea (7.5" male) which is still in qt. If I did add the jag, I'd probably qt her too and add both the Argentea and jag at the same time to take focus off one newcomer being introduced. My gut still says no, but I am getting ready to walk out the door:irked:......theres that little devil again lol

oh yeah and she's only 20 bucks

I have one about 6" right now in a community tank...oscar, Jack dempsey, firemouth, barracuda, and some convicts and the jag is just fine. Actually the jag really doesn't bother anyone. The oscar is dominant and always has been, so I don't know if that keeps the Jag under control, but it seems that way(for now). My tank is 150 gallons, and I have a huge rock piling that they can swim through, and a side devoted to fake plants. so far so good.(that could very well change however..)

300 gallons? I say do it. Throw the argentea in and put her in qt. Throw her in once you feel It's safe to do so. Worst case, you take her back or put her back in qt while you put her up on the MFK marketplace.

300 gallon is plenty of room to add a Jaguar, even though Jaguars grow quick and the largest I have seen was 14 inches in a 260 gallon custom made aquarium. That 14 inch Jaguar didn't bother the other cichlids and the only thing the Jaguar had a issue with, was the channel catfish that was trying to start a fight with the Jaguar.

Thanks man, I am struggling with a similar issue, Jags are probably my favorite fish but I have purposely set all my tanks up to avoid fish that are higher on the aggression scale I got tired of the constant splashing of water out, and now with all these comments about keeping them I am afraid I am no longer able to fight my urges.

i have a jag in my community, not sure if it is male or female. It is about 13inch long. The tank mates consist of a mature female red devil who is spawning with my mature black deamon cichlid, i also have a black barred midas female. There are also some non aggressive fish such as some bigclown knives (22inch) and the jag gives no problems, it is such a great fish to keep ;)

I know tell me about it! You're all bad influences lol

But seriously, the more I think about it the more I wanna do it. Especially for 20 bucks. I figure, worst case scenario, it doesn't work but she's confused the current fish so much that my Argentea settles in without much drama and I Rehome her. Best case, all works out
