Mangenes Cichlid need help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
here is an example showing that they can co-exist with other tankmates.
This pic doesnt show the chinese perch or other clown knife thats in with him.
He is 13" and never touched any of the other fish (except for the oscar at first, but then he got over it)

Killer tank man! I bought a 5" Jag for $23 today. The jag has so much color man he kicks ass! Thanks for encouraging me to get the guy. The only problem is my big oscar is bigger than the jag and he is pickin on him aand chasing him a little here and there. Also I have a male con in there with them the con is 4", when I turned on the tank lights I looked in the log in the tank and saw the jag and con duke it out for a minute till I broke them up. What happened was when I turned on the lights the jag and con was side by side in the dark and as soon as they realized they were who they were they locked lips hardcore! I wish I had it on video. Anyways I hope everyone can get along. If it came down to it who would win between the jag and the con. I really dont want to loose a $20+ fish to a $3 fish ya know!

Hopefully your oscar can keep that up. He's gonna need to.

BTW, sweet tank! What is that other fish in there? It looks like a Trimac.

just got a small one today maybe 2 inches and i got some nicaraguense cichlids they are so sweet..

If your tank is big enough, your con may be ok. Like Scottfree added, with the Oscar as the mediator and prime target, they may all get along. Watch the lip locking though. When mine was a juvie, I had a JD that used to pick on him all day, until they lip-locked. After that, the Jag ruled the tank, and wouldn't allow the JD a moment's peace.

Good luck, and enjoy your new monster! :)

they will lock up for a while, I have pix in my gallery of my oscar and jag locking lips. they act like buddies now!!

Scottv thats the flowerhorn i was speaking of earlier:)

definetely managuense ;) great fish, awesome pic Rally

but the guy told me it is a Mangenes Cichlid native to South America and sometimes been carried by birds and such to Africa and thrive there as well

just a little advice, don't EVER ASK THAT GUY FOR ADVICE AGAIN. that has to be the most ludicrous thing I've ever heard for so many reasons I won't even get started. if there are any jaguar cichlids (Parachromis managuense) in any part of Africa then they were introduced by man, not birds. :grinyes:

how well a jag will cope with its tankmates depends on a lot of things. one of those things is the personality of the individual fish. for the most part though, jags are highly territorial and if they don't have enough territory they can become incredibly aggressive. that leads to tank size which is equally as important as the personality of the individual fish. the bigger the tank the better chance you have that a jag will live peacefully with other fish. Rallysman, how big is the tank you have that jag in? If I remember right it's your 300 gallon right? That is a big reason why your jag gets along with those other fish. In a 150 gallon there is at the least a decent chance your jag will eventually fight with the oscar. Just keep an eye on them especially when the jag gets to around 7" or 8". that is when he/she will start showing his true personality and aggression level. :)

Maybe he meant metal birds (airplane) or maybe Jaguar fry carried in the mouth of a Pelican? :grinyes:
