there are clay pots in there but he prefers the driftwood. he has always been in a bare bottom tank, so i dont think substrate is an issue

Try giving him a carnivore pellet I like NLS. Never seen that as I had a mango for 4 years. My neice still has him and he nver changes colors like that. He likes the driftwood and is in black gravel. Likes the clay pots also.
