I've been looking at these fish for a long time, and I see many people saying that they need to be kept full salt when large, and many people who say they do fine in fresh water as well, what's the truth? Can you keep these fish happy and healthy in full fresh?

do to lack of replys i will put in my 2c. i am no expert or have ever kept them, but understand they are brackish. they are very fresh friendly but not life freshwater, saltwater wont hurt them either. but i think somewhere in between is best.

Mangrove Jacks can live in full fresh for life happily. They are the same as Barramundi, living theire juvi lives in freshwater before leaving for full salt environments. But there are always fish that get land locked and live long healthy lives.

Here is a photo I took of a jack at Mooloolaba's Under Water World living in full fresh. Looks healthy to me.

The one I had was in freshwater the entire time and I never had a problem with him growing. I got him around 11" and he was growing about 1" per month till I got rid of him.

In the wild they don't live in fresh. , as babys they are found in almost totaly fresh , then brakish , then salt. There name should give that away.
Better to keep them in the same water they live in in the wild IMO

I don't know much about this species, but Jacks are generally saltwater fish. They may venture into brackish or freshwater for food or reproduction. Again, I don't know much about the mangrove jack and due to its name you might think brackish is the way to go.

so my vote = brackish
