Mangrove Jack Tankmates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Probably will work out with large eels and groupers as long as they can't swallow the mangrove jack whole

thanks... my plan is keeping them in fresh. so i need to know what freshwater monsters could keep up with mangrove jacks... largemouths, jaguars, oscars or peacocks?

I imagine stuff like oscars and peacocks would be too passive...most of the ones I've seen are kept solo

not much when they get large, had oscars barra jardini etc with one and worked for some time but one by one they all went bye bye, first you have to get one thats not extremely aggressive which is hard.

I find the only thing that really works is a fish he wont see as a threat but is not big enough for him to eat, which is why I say when they hit the 12-18 mark no tank mates, if the tank mates grow this size also he sees them as a threat and at this size there teeth come in, one bite is all it takes they are much stronger then most fish, a jardini is almost a gold fish compared to mine.

Anyways saying this, I still think jacks in there own tank with mangrove root is the best, they are like massive oscars and playful so they always come and say hello, the only thing is if you want to keep them for a while you will need a 10ft by 3ft tank, they can reach 1.2m in fish tanks if cared for right, if they stay at 2ft just a 6x2x2 is fine. be prepared to buy lots of prawns and feeders ;)

Hey squirtle, my jack is currently about 8" and hes not how you describe jacks at all, hes quite timid and when i walk in the room he darts and hides etc, do they grow out of this or do i have a dud hah

his still a baby and shy, I find its the same with dovii and umbees also not as bad but when young they are quite shy.

I believe up to about 12 inchs he was shy too not so shy at times I think he thought he was an oscar xD! once he gets bigger though he will change, I am yet to find a jack that wont kill anything if it feels threated or gets pushed around.

Oh i see, so hes got abit of growing before he starts destroying everything haha. Also hes in a 200 liter 3ft atm (saving for a 6ft) how long can i expect to be able to keep him in there before i need to upgrade?
