Mangrove Jack Tankmates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would say until about 12-14 inch would be best, mines in a 4x2x2 kind of its a bit wider and higher just at 120G and is pretty fine in there he cant get any massive strokes in but apart for that his happy. ultimately a 6x2x2 will also be small its the lowest I would go for keeping one an 8x3x2 is best but these fish do get big and very powerful, like I said I am yet to find another fish with the same strength and in a small tank smashing around it wont be fun, even when they are 2ft moving them is a pita one tail splash and you lose a good 2 inchs of your water if they dont swim right threw the net!

I would just check gumtree, theres always some cheap big tanks going for 400-500$ even cheaper if lucky just check the seal before buying it and you will be much better off with a jack in a big tank, its like keeping a tiger in a tank you cant watch it take off and charge at things.

What are you feeding yours btw?

Yeah im saving for a nice 6x2x2 so hes only in the 3ft temporary, he wasnt eating for ages but now hes finally taking prawns, i mean he was always eating goldfish but i wanted to get him off that as its to expensive.

Id love to get him onto hikari carnivore pellets but i dont think that will happen as he still hesitates at the prawns hah, so i might stick on prawns and give him livies as a treat.

2-3 inch just over 2ft ;)

went from pellets to XL banana prawns with rare live/dead feedings I find prawns make him happy and u can get a weeks worth for 5 bucks which I find good, the girls at woolys have even started giving me about .8 of a kg for 2.5$ so going at 10 bucks per a month.

I think big fish should not really be fed pellets, sure it works but I find the live food and prawns give better results, his always a bright red despite being in a small tank with no salt normally they put them in salt to get such a strong red all the time.

Oh so im better off keeping him on prawns? And wont that cloud the water? Mines quite a dull colour despite having salt in the tank, id love to get him red but he doesnt even turn red when hes feeding

hmmm, Mine eats the banana or tiger prawns whole, I just remove the shell and head, no cloudy water. my eel does play with her prawns and smash them around so the water goes a little cloudy if she cant straight swallow it but it only last 1 hour tops, just cut the prawn to a size he can handle easy.

yeah mine goes hot red when he feds, reds I have ever seen never been in salt his life.

To the OP I might try it with a dorado of around the same size in a big enough tank. My dorado has a lot of fight in him, I've never kept a jack but I'm guessing he could easily hold his own with one.

LOL, you will need a few 1000g to house those 2 together.

dorado = 100cm (just under 4ft) 34kg max

jack = 120cm (4ft) 12-16kg

8ft just to house the 2 fish with little swimming room when the jack gets bigger he will try to claim the whole tank so you will need areas they can each own looking at 20ft for a peaceful tank. might as well go for a polywood 5000G and turn it salt with some sharks!

this ones just at 2.5FT with still a lot of growing to do. might be even bigger.

and this is what they get too if you house them right...

yes none will get to this size in aquariums as everyone under sizes the tanks, the one guy who used to keep one that got just at 3ft before it died was in a 12x3 and only made it too 3 so your going to need an even bigger tank then that to push 4ft.

as for dorado I just went of the google facts, but it gave me the salt water one my bad! still 2ft in aquariums.

I cant see it working, sure he can try but one or the other will end up killing the other in a 6x2 imo. there is a reason why 95% of people who keep big jacks have them alone, you need a massive tank to have them with other fish which most cant afford. just try to find someone keeping a big jack with other fish thats not crazily overstocked.
