Mangrove jack

i've been thinking of getting a mangrove jack and i'm confused on the whole "they can live in fresh water their whole life' and others saying 'they have to be in full salt water at 6 inches'. can someone clear this up. and if i were to get a jack that's already in salt water would slowly diluting the salt water in the tank till its fresh over water changes be the correct method of getting it fully freshwater?

Mangrove jack have been bred and raised in pure freshwater. So will thrive until adulthood. No salt needed.

The big issue is trusting the lfs or importer that's its a true freshwater snapper. I know was brought in prior and coming in from Australia and Asia.

What if I caught one that was in a river system with salt water

We have similar in Florida. We have mangrove snapper here. They will come into brackish and some freshwater when small. But when adults will migrate out to full salt.

If it's bred and raised in full salt then from fry to adult then in salt. Especially if no access to freshwater canals and brackish water etc.

They can easily be converted to full fresh if they have come from brackish. I guess it also depends on the size and development
