mangrove roots

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I recently wrote a paper on salt-tolerant plants (halophytes). Mangroves can grow in 0%-150% seawater (red mangroves at least), but they grow MUCH slower in fresh water. Why this happens isn't completely understood, but it's the case with most halophytes.

Some scientists believe that the osmotic gradient produced between the vacuoles and the cytoplasm (in the leaf cells) is used in the plant's metabolic processes.

One of my favorite aquatic plants. Doesn't do much but fun to grow them out. The roots are cool though. When they get big enough they will go in the tank.

Ebay, $20 for 15 over 12". I have had the below in both BW and FW.

No, just standard procedure when you have severums who have a grudge against plants of any kind. ;)

i meant dead or fake large mangrove roots for my tank arent there really realistic fake ones?

GL finding fake ones. I have been looking for a long time as well. Most of us use manzanita wood instead. It is really "branchy" for lack of a better way to describe it. You can take the branches and mount them upside down to achieve the "root" look. 408smokin did a great job of that here: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=248350

Just the light reflecting off the walls from the tank's T5. I actually kept these in my kitchen in glass jar, tank water by a window for about 3 months and they did fine. They do grow much faster under better lighting conditions though. ;)
