I have kept a few smashers, and my housemate has a spearer. Both seem very hardy, but a big smasher deffinitly needs acrylic.

I kept one for some time, and the general consensus is that they will not break aquarium glass, even though they are capable. I kept a "Spearer" myself, but the "Smasher" species are certainly capable especially when digging. You're better off putting a sheet of acrylic at the bottom of a normal glass aquarium.

Good advice. Another post on mantis annoyed me with everyone saying you will get your tank busted but for ppl who are scared that would be a good comprimise.

I have been interested in keeping a Odontodactylus scyllarus, how big of a tank would you guys reccomend for one of these?

Would be a fairly decent size tank.We have Scyllas here where i live and several months ago, there was an article in the newspaper of a guy who caught a 14"! When asked what he was going to do with it, he said he was going to eat it. Supposed to be REALLY TASTY!

20L for peacocks, 30 would be better
