Under what circumstances did that happen?

I have spoken with scientists who have kept many of these creatures, for prolonged periods of time, and have not found any difficulty at all, with any tank smashing.

There is a famous video with Dr Roy Caldwell called "the fastest claw in the west", a BBC documentary with david attenborough which shows a mantis breaking a tank, but only after having been trained AFAIK.

I'd be interested to know what species of mantis broke the glass too.

Here's a story of one. http://saltaquarium.about.com/gi/dy...www.blueboard.com/mantis/sighting/report1.htm

This was a hitchhiker at work, and it made it into one of our LR holding tanks. We are not sure which species it was. A customer was in the room looking at the LR pieces, and saw the mantis shrimp and told us about him. A few days later one of the other employees was topping off the tank, at the other end he saw the shrimp hit the glass twice. The glass shattered, water and LR went everywhere, and we mopped, and dried for the rest of the day. It was a 100 gallon long tank. I think it was 3/8ths glass if I remember correctly. I know they can be safely kept in acrylic tanks though.

There is a small one at my LFS that is kept in a Plastic container within the tanks.

Those plastic containers you usually get to take home mice, Spiders, etc with the vented top.

Pretty thick plastic..

Their 3in peacock keeps blasting right through them..
